Miguel Ferrando Rocher (Alcoy, 198x) is a stage director, playwright, professor, and scientist from Valencia, Spain.

University Teaching and Scientific Research

Miguel Ferrando-Rocher (Senior Member, IEEE) holds a Ph.D. and a degree in Telecommunication Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Spain. In 2012, he joined the Complex Radiation Systems Team at the Institut d’Electronique et des Technologies du numéRique (IETR), INSA Rennes, France, where he contributed to satellite reflectarray antenna technologies in collaboration with Thales Alenia Space France and Thales Alenia Space Italy. php-template Copiar Editar Since 2013, he has worked at the Antennas and Propagation Lab (APL) at UPV. In 2016, he was a Visiting Researcher at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2019, he became Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics, Systems Engineering and Signal Theory at the University of Alicante. Since 2023, he has served as Associate Professor at the Department of Communications, UPV. He also collaborates with the Computational Electromagnetics and Microwave Engineering Group (GMECA) at the University of Alicante for joint research activities. His current research focuses on satellite communications on-the-move (SATCOM OTM), phased arrays, antennas for ADS-B systems, and high-altitude platforms (HAPS). He is a pioneer in gap waveguide technology and high-frequency millimeter-wave components, with more than 100 publications in top-tier journals and international conferences. He has received several awards, including the AIRBUS Defence and Space Award (2019), the UPV Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award (2018), and the Young Researcher of the Year Award at the 2017 URSI Conference. Since 2022, he has served as Ambassador of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society’s Young Professionals Program. In 2024, he was appointed Chair of the IEEE Spain Consultants Network. In 2025, he became Deputy Director of the iTEAM Research Institute, the largest university research center in Spain.

Performing Arts

In parallel with his academic and research career at the University of Alicante and the Universitat Politècnica de València, Miguel Ferrando-Rocher is also a stage director and playwright. He trained in Stage Direction and Playwriting at the Escola Superior d’Art Dramàtic de València, and has broadened his training through numerous workshops led by acclaimed playwrights and directors such as Pablo Messiez, Alberto Conejero, María Velasco, Carles Alfaro, Xavi Puchades, Carles Alberola, Eva Zapico, Itziar Pascual, María José Peris, Álex O’Dogherty, Diego Braguinsky, and Antonio Rojano, among others.

In 2013, he founded the company Groc Teatre to promote original and self-financed theatrical projects. That same year, he premiered his first full-length play at the Teatro Agrícola de Alboraya, followed by several short-format plays staged in various venues and festivals in Valencia, including Miniteatre at Teatro Rialto, Microteatro, and the Russafa Escènica Festival. Many of the actors and actresses involved have since become key figures in the Valencian performing arts scene.

Between 2017 and 2019, he wrote and directed three full-length plays in three consecutive years: Genovese (Ultramar, 2017), Tourmalet (Teatre Micalet, 2018), and Áurea (Espai Inestable, 2019), the latter as part of the ‘Graners de Creació’ residency program.

With Genovese, Groc Teatre won the 2019 Max Audience Award, and received a nomination for Best New Show at the same edition of the awards. In that same year, Tourmalet, written and directed by Ferrando-Rocher, won the Jury Prize at the Escènia Foios national festival. Actor Guille Zavala was awarded Best New Actor by the Association of Professional Actors and Actresses of Valencia (AAPV) for his portrayal of cyclist Luis Ocaña.

Following the success of Tourmalet, the publishing house La Caja Books released the Spanish-language version (originally written in Valencian) as part of their curated anthology La Caja de la Bicicleta, with a foreword by writer Guillermo Órtiz.
